Amazon Expedition Tambopata – 3 days/2 nights
Overview
Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Peruvian Amazon on a 3-day Tambopata expedition. Cruise along the Tambopata River, explore the incredible Tambopata National Reserve, and discover the rainforest through unique day and night experiences. Encounter monkeys, capybaras, caimans, colorful birds, and other fascinating wildlife in their natural habitat.
One of the highlights of the journey is a visit to the El Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather in one of the Amazon’s most spectacular wildlife displays. Combined with jungle walks, nocturnal exploration, and the sounds of the rainforest, this expedition offers an unforgettable connection with the heart of the Amazon.
Itinerary
- Reception at the airport and transfer to Wasai Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will receive a tropical welcome juice and a brief explanation of the trip.
- Then we will start a trip of approximately two hours to Wasai Tambopata lodge. The trip is initially carried out by land vehicle for 47km of paved road followed by 17 km of an off-road route that passes through settler’s farms and primary forests. This road ends in a small port in the Tambopata river where our motorboat will be waiting for us to cruise the Tambopata River downstream for approximately 20 minutes, headed towards Wasai Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch on the route). During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world's largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife.
- Reception and accommodation at the Lodge. Introductory nocturnal walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see and listen to the insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with some nocturnal mammal. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon. Night at Wasai Tambopata Lodge. (BL, D).

- Early wake up at 4:30 am to begin with our 60-minute journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an unforgettable experience. We will have breakfast while we wait for the macaws to arrive.
- Halfway through the morning we will return to Wasai Tambopata Lodge. Cruising through the Tambopata National Reserve offers the best opportunities to see capybaras, tapirs, monkeys and with luck: jaguars. At your arrival, you can relax in the hammocks or take a refreshing bath in our beautiful swimming pool enjoying the landscape.
- After lunch, we will make a short ethno botanical walk of 1 km to learn about plants and how they integrate with the ecosystem. You will find out about medicinal plants and other uses that the native communities give them. We can see walking palm trees, sacred lupuna trees, hollow trees inhabited by ants and more. At nightfall, we embark the boat again to make a nocturnal caiman search. Night at Wasai Tambopata Lodge. (B, L, D)
